Aerosol Particle Organic Analytical Training course
Kumar Sarang, NaMeS Ph.D. student, participated in the “Aerosol Particle Organic Analytical Training course” organized by Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research and supported by EUROCHAMP-2020. The aim of Calibration centre for the analysis of organic tracers and particle phase constituents (OGTAC CC) was to introduce researchers working in atmospheric science to the sophisticated chromatographic techniques such as HPLC/ESI-TOFMS and UPLC/ESI-IMS-QTOFMS, and provide hands on training on these techniques to carry trace analysis of field and chamber experiments.
Day 1, included lectures based on general introduction about filter materials, collection, artifacts, extracting, storage and basics of liquid chromatography, ionization, detection techniques and enrichment procedures, followed by an intensive hand on training on day 2 & 3 at LC-μ TOF and LC-ESI/TOFMS (Waters, Synapt HDMS) including sample preparation and extraction procedures.
On day 4, Kumar Sarang participated in lectures on matrix effect, target and non-target analysis followed by lab visits at TROPOS, depicting various world class techniques available to study atmospheric reactions such as atmospheric chambers, EC/OC analysis, gas-phase reaction flow tubes and reaction kinetics of atmospheric radicals.
Finally on day 5, he participated in a closing presentation from Waters regarding recent technological developments in the chromatographic techniques to provide more accurate analysis results with major focus on LC-MS/MS.
This training was directly related to Sarang’s future research and will provide him with better interpretation of his experimental results.
